What is a Developer Success Engineer at WorkOS?

At WorkOS, the Developer Success Engineering (DSE) team sits at the nerve center of the company, a critical link between our customers (developers) and our engineering team. What really separates being a DSE at WorkOS from similar support engineering roles is the diversity and scope of what you get to do in a day. If you’ve ever experienced the monotony of a conveyer belt of tickets all-day-every-day, the WorkOS Developer Success Engineer role will come as a breath of fresh air. Beyond traditional support troubleshooting, we are showcasing WorkOS’ capabilities to developers, rolling out new product and triaging feedback back to engineering. Engineering is shipping weekly (fast!), so we even take on some engineering tasks (SDKs, Example Apps, Integrations, etc.). We work hard to earn developer love, and in turn it’s one of the top reasons developers choose to use WorkOS.

Developer Communication via Slack

At the start of the day you’ll likely catch up on any customer messages that may have come in overnight. This could be in the form of existing threads that were updated or new tickets assigned to you. We assign tickets on a round robin system in order to be as equitable as possible. Although customers can reach out in a variety of ways (shared Slack channel, email, or web widget) everything is centralized into our ticketing system (Zendesk).

Product Demos

Depending on the day, you may hop on a call with a prospective customer to give a product demo (or to take notes for another DSE giving the demo). This is typically our first touch with customers and a great opportunity to introduce them to all WorkOS has to offer.

On occasion, you may also find yourself jumping on a support call here or there. These are typically to help a customer get unblocked, help explain a concept or give some light implementation help.

And you can always know that you’re not alone in solving customer issues! Our team loves to collaborate and help out one another via Slack or Zoom calls, and we even have standing meetings for discussing tricky issues or blockers twice a week.

Updating SDKs, Docs, Example Apps

In between customer engagements is when the choose-your-own-adventure part of the DSE role comes into play. Everyone on the team takes on different projects based on their skills and interests. These can include:
